Multiplying numbers with up to 4 digits

LO: To multiply numbers with up to 4 digits.

National Curriculum Objectives covered:

To multiply multi-digit numbers up to 4 digits by a two-digit whole number using the formal written method of long multiplication
To perform mental calculations, including with mixed operations and large numbers.

The main activity of this outdoor lesson requires your children to apply their reasoning skills for multiplication to complete paired challenges. This lesson requires minimal resources and engages your children through active learning.

The four operations with numbers up to 4 digits

LO: To add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers with up to 4 digits.

To multiply multi-digit numbers up to 4 digits by a two-digit whole number using the formal written method of long multiplication.
To divide numbers up to 4 digits by a two-digit number using the formal written method of short division.
To perform mental calculations, including with mixed operations and large numbers.

Develop your children’s problem solving skills through a ‘code breaking’ activity! This fun and engaging outdoor lesson gives them an opportunity to practise using all four operations as well as their reasoning skills.

Performing calculations with all four operations

LO: To perform calculations with all four operations.

National Curriculum Objectives covered:

To use their knowledge of the order of operations to carry out calculations involving the four operations.
To multiply multi-digit numbers up to 4 digits by a two-digit whole number using the formal written method of long multiplication divide numbers up to 4 digits by a two-digit whole number using the formal written method of long division.
To add and subtract whole numbers with more than 4 digits, including using formal written methods (Y5 objective).

During this outdoor lesson, your children will create and follow exciting treasure hunts around your space, offering them the opportunity to practise using both mental and formal written methods in a fun way!
