Year 3 - Fractions - Unit 1

Understanding what a denominator represents

LO: To understand what a denominator represents.

National Curriculum Objectives covered:
  • To recognise and use fractions as numbers: unit fractions and non-unit fractions with small denominators.

Deepen your children’s understanding of fractions and equal parts using this outdoor lesson. This lesson combines movement and collaboration to develop your children’s knowledge of denominators through practical games and hands-on learning. With all resources ready-to-go this lesson requires minimal preparation for maximum fun!

Comparing and ordering unit fractions

LO: To compare and order unit fractions.

National Curriculum Objectives covered:
  • To compare and order unit fractions, and fractions with the same denominators.
  • To solve problems that involve all of the learning.

During this outdoor lesson, your children will focus on comparing and ordering unit fractions by taking part in ‘Feeding time at the Zoo’. The zoo keeper’s animals are hungry! And your children will have to work in teams to find and sort a variety of fractions to divide how best to feed them!

Understanding the numerators in non-unit fractions

LO: To understand the numerators in non-unit fractions.

National Curriculum Objectives covered:
  • To recognise and use fractions as numbers.
  • To recognise fractions in the context of parts of a whole, numbers, measurements, a shape, and unit fractions as a division of a quantity.

Combine sensory, hands-on experiences with problem solving in this outdoor lesson. Your children will be using natural materials to make pizzas according to the order forms they’re given and will need to use their knowledge of numerators to work out what toppings are required! A fun, exciting lesson your class is bound to enjoy!

Recognising fractions as parts of a whole

LO: To understand a whole.

National Curriculum Objectives covered:
  • To recognise fractions in the context of parts of a whole, numbers, measurements, a shape, and unit fractions as a division of a quantity.

Deepen your children’s understanding of the ‘whole’ using this outdoor lesson that utilises chalk and natural resources to provide your children with a way to represent their understanding of how a ‘whole’ can be partitioned into fractions. They’ll also take part in discussions to demonstrate their reasoning skills.

Comparing and ordering non-unit fractions

LO: To compare and order non-unit fractions.

National Curriculum Objectives covered:
  • To compare and order fractions with the same denominators.
  • To begin to understand unit and non-unit fractions as numbers on the number line, and deduce relations between them, such as size and equivalence.
  • To go beyond the [0, 1] interval, including relating this to measure.

The main activity of this outdoor lesson requires your children to use their knowledge of non-unit fractions to sort and order chocolate bar toppings. They’ll have the opportunity to use resources they don’t typically use to add fun and enjoyment, while creating their chocolate bars to show their understanding of this concept.

Amazing resources which have really helped our school be more confident in using the outdoor space to enhance the children's learning. Great, fun, easy to follow lesson plans, which link directly to the key objectives!

The Alfresco planning hub is a fantastic resources with lesson that are easy to pick up and teach. I use them both as full lesson, lesson starters and intervention session for an LSA. Would highly recommend.

Karyn Weglarz

I am a member of the Planning Hub and I love the variety of lessons provided. Most lessons need only simple materials that I usually already have on hand. I love taking my students out with these lessons.

Amy McTague

Brilliant resources, easy to follow and adapt for learners, clear progression!

Laura Walton

The online planning hub is a lifesaver. I teach in KS1 and the children always ask when we are going outside and parents always say how excited the children are about their outdoor learning. It is exactly what I was looking for and have now been using it for several years. Thank you for such a brilliant resource!
