Deepen your children’s understanding of mass and how to compare it using your outdoor space and natural items. Within this outdoor lesson you’ll find plenty of opportunities for children to interact with nature and secure their knowledge of balance scales.

Measuring mass in kilograms

LO: To measure mass.

National Curriculum Objectives covered:

To choose and use appropriate standard units to estimate and measure mass (kg/g) to the nearest appropriate unit, using scales.

The main activity of this outdoor lesson requires children to measure mass of materials in kg and will challenge their understanding of what ‘mass’ means as well as encourage them to discuss their findings.

Investigating and comparing volume

LO: To investigate and compare volume.

National Curriculum Objectives covered:

To compare and order volume/capacity and record the results using >, < and =.

During this outdoor lesson your children will investigate finding volumes and comparing them using easy-to-resource games and activities. They will deepen their understanding of volume through groupwork.

Measuring volume in millilitres

LO: To measure volume in ml.

National Curriculum Objectives covered:

To choose and use appropriate standard units to estimate and measure capacity (litres/ml) to the nearest appropriate unit, using measuring vessels.

Have your children apply their knowledge of reading scales to measure volume in this outdoor lesson. They will need to work carefully and use their creativity and imagination to create potions using their measuring skills!
