Wriggle and crawl like a minibeast in various micro-habitats created in your own outdoor space!

The workshop will commence by playing some boundary games in your outdoor area, to ensure children are aware of the space they are working in.

During the workshop we will focus on environments found in a garden habitat, all of which we will recreate in your outdoor space!

The children will undertake a human-sized exploration of various micro-habitats in groups.

Drawing their focus to the conditions of the environment and the minibeasts that can be found there, discussing why they think the minibeasts like or dislike each environment. Their discovery will include crawling through damp, dark spaces, moving through tall, thin grass, squelching through the mud, burying their hands in leaves and bark and wading through a recreated pond.

Our session will finish with the children creating a piece of transient art; using natural loose parts to represent the minibeasts they have learned about!

They will then be challenged to apply their knowledge and write descriptive words around their minibeast to describe the micro-habitat it lives in! Your children will finish this workshop with a firm understanding of the different micro-habitats minibeasts can be found in and their conditions. Perfect for covering the ‘Living things and their habitats’ objectives in Science. They will also develop their descriptive vocabulary through talk with their peers throughout the workshop. Designed for Key Stage One however, it can be adapted to suit Early Years Foundation Stage.
