Bees & Pollination

Introduce your class to the fascinating role bees play in pollinating our plants!

Following our introductory boundary games & rules, the children will take on the role of worker bees! In groups they’ll relay race to collect ‘nectar’ and apply their scale reading skills. The hive with the most nectar will be the winners! Through this game the children will learn about the importance of nectar and the plants that provide it for a hive’s survival.

Next we will play a practical game to observe how bees transfer pollen between different flowering plants.

Each group will have a large tarpaulin to represent a flower & different coloured powder paint to represent the pollen. The children will need to co-ordinate their movements to move our sponge ball bee from group to group. At the end we’ll observe how much pollen the bee collected whilst visiting each group’s flower.

The children will also have the the opportunity to inspect real honeycomb and taste local honey, whilst learning about how the bees use the nectar to create it!

This outdoor workshop is aimed at Lower Key Stage Two but is adaptable to all ages. Your class will gain an understanding of how bees live, become clear on the difference the difference between nectar, honey and pollen. Our session is designed to be delivered in a kinaesthetic learning style outdoors!
